Archaeological itineraries
The territory of Arzachena enjoys a remarkable archaeological heritage. It is rich in sites of great interest both for the density of the monuments in relation to the extension of the municipal territory and for their variety (funerary and cultic circles, rock shelters, funerary tafoni, dolmens, nuraghi, megalithic defensive walls and fortified villages, nuragic temples).
It is possible to follow a sort of historical itinerary that begins in the Neolithic age, when small agro-pastoral communities inhabited the numerous granite cavities that characterise the surroundings of Arzachena. One example is the shelter under the rock of the Monti Incappiddhatu, which housed man until the Nuragic period, when a village of huts developed around it.
There are two major nuragic areas that can be visited: one on the outskirts of Arzachena and another just five kilometres away. The first consists of the Nuraghe Albucciu, interesting for its architectural features, the Moru Tomb of Giants, a sacred place throughout the Neuragic period, and the Machittu temple, a cult building among the granite heights in an excellent state of preservation. The second nuragic area includes the neuragic complex of La Prisgiona, consisting of a nuraghe and a village of around a hundred huts spread over five hectares. A plunge into the history of this area with its breathtaking landscapes.
